Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League

Equipment Guide

The Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League will provide the following uniform items for each division:
T-Ball - Velcro baseball hat, team jersey (t-shirt), and youth sports pants with drawstring.
Baseball - Fitted baseball hat, team jersey, full-length baseball pants, and belt.
Softball - Velcro visor OR headband, team jersey, knicker style pants, belt, and knee-high socks.

Team uniforms will be distributed to the team during the first few weeks of practice.

The league will provide four (5) helmets to each team to share.  It's encouraged that each player purchase their own.  Altering the helmet in any form, including painting or adding decals (by anyone other than the manufacturer or authorized dealer) may void the warranty. Faceguards are permitted, provided they were affixed to the helmet by the manufacturer and contain all of the original fasteners.

Catcher's Gear

Catchers must wear approved long or short model chest protectors. All catchers must wear chest protectors with the neck collar, throat guard, shin guards and catcher's helmet, all of which must meet League specifications and standards. All catchers must wear a hockey style helmet/mask combo, during infield/outfield practice, pitcher warm-up and games. Not to worry though...Piqua Junior Baseball and Softball League provides ALL the Catcher's Gear!!!

The items listed below are generally not provided by the League.

Baseball gloves are required and should be at both practices and games.  Avoid buying an oversized glove. Beginners should stick to a smaller glove for additional control.  It does take time to break in your new glove.  No matter what you do, most will agree that the most effective way to break in a baseball glove is by using it.  Most gloves have the pre-measured size stamped inside where the pocket is. Below are general sizes:

Tee-Ball  9-10
Infield 10 - 11.75
Pitcher 11.5 - 12.25
Outfield 11.5 - 12.25

Batting Gloves

Batting gloves are optional and a personal preference of the player.

Baseball cleats are not required however highly recommended and is arguably the most important baseball item you can buy your child. If you want your child to truly learn and enjoy any sport as well as avoid injury, you will go out of your way to purchase them appropriate shoes. Cleats with metal spikes are not permitted except for the 13-15 y/o baseball Division. Shoes with molded cleats are permissible. No soccer cleats if possible. Parents can select the color.  Most common color is black.

Athletic Supporters

All male players playing divisions higher than Tee Ball in the "catcher's position" must wear an Athletic Supporter for their protection. All other players are encouraged to wear one for their protection.

Equipment Bag

Baseball equipment bags are an optional item but are very nice to have.  The player can put all his/her baseball gear & water in the bag and hang it on the dugout fence.  This item can be used for future seasons.

Long Sleeve Under Jersey Shirt

Long sleeve shirts are optional and the parents choice.  These keep the player warm for any of those cold spring weather games.

Baseball Bat

The Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League currently follows the guidelines from Babe Ruth League, Inc. and will provide each team with one (1) bat if requested. However, it's nice to have your own as many players want to practice when away from the team. It is essential that you select a baseball bat that fits your unique body configuration and skill level, height, weight, and hitting strength. Your bat must also conform to the specifications approved by the Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League for use in their various divisions.

Bat Sizing is always a challenge as well as if your child is beginning with baseball.  Go for a lighter bat to maintain bat speed, which is the top priority in hitting.  If they cannot hold the bat for 20 seconds without the arm starting to shake, it's too heavy.
