From one 'pandemic' to the next

The Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League is one of the thousands of youth leagues effected by the shortage of umpires. "This year is the worst I've ever seen it" said Board President, Nathan Penrod.

The shortage is a direct result of the behavior from youth sports parents and coaches. Penrod continued, "There is no way, in any game, an umpire can be right one hundred percent of the time. If it's a close call he/she is going to upset fifty percent of the players, coaches, and parents." This has been seen on several social media platforms. Videos have surfaced where parents and coaches threaten the umpires...because of a judgement call!

The Piqua Junior Baseball & Softball League wants to change all of this and create a fun and enjoyable time for all of the umpires. They currently have thirteen Board members, one of which is a certified umpire. Board member, Ryan Branscomb, is an OHSAA Certified Umpire. He has a passion for creating a positive atmosphere for the Umpires. Ryan wants to help by training those who want to become an umpire or anyone wanting to learn more about it.

The PJBSL currently uses SignUp.com as a way to schedule Umpires. There is a link on their webpage under "Earn Cash" where you can learn more about the opportunities available as an Umpire. Anyone with questions can email them to [email protected].
